I've mentioned before how PODD communication has been an amazing tool to help Jayden/Adam and I regulate and manage Jayden's intense behavior and emotions. I finally was able to catch a VERY small breakdown the other day. It's amazing how by offering Jayden words he is able to calm himself. Even if he maybe didn't really know what was wrong (as often happens in kids with traumatic brain injuries) at least he had words to try and put language to his feelings rather than using violent often self i

Harper and Mom playing with music and using PODD to talk all about it! Music is such an engaging activity! I love how it gives us so much opportunity to model both topic specific words like music and instruments but also lots of high frequency words such as Me, You and Play! In this video you will see me doing a ton of long awkward pauses. I, very intentionally, am trying to show Harper that I am open and wanting to hear her voice and I’m trying to give Harper plenty of time to process and let h

So... In prep for Siah using an eye gaze device to access PODD for certain times of the day I'm starting to model and teach visual scanning. This is hard to teach because a kid will only visually attend if they actually want to. Ha! So mom saying "hey Siah, lets work on visual scanning" isn't exactly appealing. Lol. It must be worked into our everyday routine. But I just wanted to film so I could show how it's gonna work for us. I also have a little flashlight that I was using but forgot to pick

This weekend while we were out shopping Angela used a few new sentences! While we were eating lunch she said she "let's go shopping -- back to page 1 -- do something -- buy!" Then while we were food shopping she said "I want an activity -- make something -- cook!" Totally impressed! And of course we picked something up that we all could cook! Brownies! The kids are using a switch to activate the blender. A switch adapted pouring cup is on our list to buy! Obviously this video was originally supe

Amazing. Simply amazing. Our conversation was so long my memory on my phone ran out. So cool. Let's just all remember that just six months ago -- maybe not even, this kid had no language. Nothing. Wow. I should probably add that food is Jayden's "thing." He has a severe traumatic brain injury and he likes things simple and consistent. Food is a constant in his life. Same routine. He is fed by tube so it's the same thing four times a day. He sits in his chair and we pour the food in his tube. So

It’s Monday! 🙋🏻♀️ I have something to say “I’m telling you something — It’s going to happen — categories — descriptions — sizes — Big — catagories — day and times — week!” It’s gonna be a big week for the Owens family. Tomorrow Angela has her big bilateral hip surgery, which means a lengthy hospital stay. 🤦🏻♀️ These are the times I’m so thankful for PODD, which will be just one of many tools we use from our multi-modal box toolbox to get us through this sucky time. This is a short video of

Oh sweet Harper. She had a ROUGH weekend. Routines were off since my parents were in town and this kid loves her routine. We were at church and she was just screaming non stop. I used her PODD earlier during the service and it helped her calm down so I started chatting again trying to get her to express what was wrong. She is so interesting to watch. She gets so hyper focused on the symbols and the act of pointing and my response. It's hard to tell at times where the actual relational side of th

Happy Monday Friends! This clip is a total mommy/daughter musical fail. I had this great moment planned but we all know how that sometimes goes. 💁🏻 Oh well. I actually still wanted to share this because there is a lot of things we (including myself) can learn from this clip. Angela was not into this. I kept going hoping that she would get into it but she didn't and that's ok. She's eleven and has her own agenda, so ya know... 🤷🏻♀️ At the end of this clip I grabbed Angela's arm to help me st

🙋🏻♀️I have something to say “I think it’s — beautiful”. This interaction makes my mommie heart melt to a big old puddle. My girl is doing it! She is communicating. She is exploring. She is babbling. She is showing personality. So many great things to point out in this video. Many times people get flustered when an individual uses their device and what they say makes no sense. That’s ok and totally a part of the learning process. Remember when we encounter typical toddlers and they just mouth

There is so very much I could say about this video. So much wonderful things are going on! I’ll start by giving a bit of background and context. I take all my girls out to lunch and shopping every Saturday. After we eat, I always dedicate some time to be intentional about modeling AAC and attempt to talk with the kids using PODD in a natural context. Since so much is going on we always have so much to talk about! Harper has obviously come so far! I want you to see how she mimics everything and h
