At least 3,500 years old, this heart scarab is attributed to the 18th Dynasty of the New Kingdom of Ancient Egypt. It is made of serpentinite and gold and features finely rendered details of the scarab beetle, with a gold chain plaited in a quadruple-link pattern. The base is inscribed with a version of Book of the Dead chapter 30A, in which Hatnefer’s name was inserted over an erased text, showing that the scarab was likely not originally made for her.
