People in Northeast Wisconsin are losing money to a new text scam claiming to be from Verizon or other companies.

Receiving a text about a customer refund can seem like good news-until you start to suspect it may simply be a scam. That has been the case for Verizon customers who are now scratching their heads over a message about a $20 credit that was sent in response to a widespread outage this week.

"Users should expect a text from Verizon that apologizes for the outage inconvenience and has a link to get the credit," said Mariana Agathoklis Scholck, Verizon's Head of Consumer Unit and Market Communications. The texts are expected to go out starting mid-day. (The texts did not start for consumers in our area until late at night)

Verizon Wireless customers across the country were slammed by a massive network outage Wednesday morning that knocked tens of thousands of phones into SOS mode and left users unable to make calls, send texts or access mobile data.

Some Verizon customers across the country are reporting phone issues on Wednesday. Some customers were seeing an "SOS" mode, which indicates no cell service, or "network unavailable" message on their phones.

Mobile, US Cellular and Xfinity down across US became a major question after Verizon faced a nationwide outage. Users saw SOS mode, no signal, and call failures. Other carriers reported spillover issues.

Verizon’s outage yesterday was bad, but it proved the company knows one thing: When things go wrong, humans want to speak to humans.
