The seizure was the latest U.S. effort to squeeze Iran’s oil-reliant economy, and came days after the Navy boarded an Iranian cargo ship near the Strait of Hormuz.
The US government said it stopped and boarded a sanctioned oil tanker in its campaign to disrupt Iran’s shipping network, the first such intervention since the imposition of a blockade just over a week ago.

US President Donald Trump said that the US blockade will remain in place for now. He also said that a two-week ceasefire with Iran, which is set to expire Wednesday evening, will not be extended.
Since the US imposed a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz on April 13, 27 ships have reportedly turned back, attempting to breach the blockade. This action followed unsuccessful peace talks with Iran.
